Castro

The Castro is one of those neighborhoods where you feel the personality before you even know the history. Castro Street itself is the spine of it — walkable, dense with shops and cafes, rainbow crosswalks at Castro and 18th, flags out on every block. It sits right below Twin Peaks and backs up to Corona Heights Park, which is an underrated little hike if you want a quick climb with a payoff view over the whole city and the bay. Every time I'm down there I end up staying longer than I planned.

You can't talk about the Castro without talking about what it means historically. This is the neighborhood where Harvey Milk ran his camera shop, Castro Camera, at 575 Castro Street, which doubled as his campaign headquarters before he became the first openly gay man elected to office in California. That storefront is a registered landmark now. The Castro has been the symbolic center of LGBTQ+ life and activism in this country for decades, and that history is still visibly part of the neighborhood, not something you have to dig for.

The Castro Theatre reopened in February 2026 after a two-year, $41 million renovation, and it's worth seeing even if you're not catching a show — the Spanish Colonial facade and the restored interior are genuinely beautiful. Beyond that, it's a good food and wander neighborhood: plenty of casual spots to grab a glass of wine and people-watch, plus the kind of independent shops that make a street feel lived-in rather than corporate.

Housing-wise, the Castro mostly dodged the 1906 earthquake and fire, so there's a real stock of original Victorians and Edwardians, many restored, mixed in with condos and some multi-unit buildings sold as TICs — worth understanding if you're looking there, since it's a different structure than a typical condo purchase. Pricing runs mid-to-high, with homes generally landing somewhere in the low seven figures depending on size and condition.
