Cow Hollow

Cow Hollow is the neighborhood I point people to when they say they want that classic San Francisco feel without the tourist chaos of Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square. It sits in the flats between Pacific Heights and the Marina, with Union Street running through the middle as the actual spine of the place — a few blocks of boutiques, wine bars, cafes, and restaurants that somehow never feel like a strip mall, even packed on a weekend. The energy is relaxed and a little moneyed. People walking dogs, grabbing coffee, sitting outside with a glass of wine on a random Tuesday afternoon.

The name is literal history. This was dairy pastureland into the late 1800s, with cows grazing roughly where Union Street's shopfronts sit today, until the city ordered the herds out in 1891 to make room for houses. Streetcar lines came through in the 1870s and the neighborhood filled in fast with Victorian and Edwardian homes climbing the sloped side streets — Filbert, Greenwich, Vallejo — while Union itself became the commercial strip. Cow Hollow barely got touched by the 1906 earthquake and fire, so a lot of that original architecture is still standing rather than rebuilt, which is a big part of why the blocks feel so intact and cohesive today.

Housing runs from classic Edwardian flats to boutique condo buildings to full Victorian single-families, with a scattering of Art Deco apartments mixed in, and prices sit toward the higher end of the city, as you'd expect for the location. If you want a break from Union Street's foot traffic, Allyne Park near the Octagon House is a small, quiet pocket, and the Vedanta Society's old temple over on Webster is one of the odder, more beautiful buildings in the city if you've never seen it. You're also a short walk to the Presidio and the water. I haven't closed a deal in Cow Hollow yet, but I spend enough of my own time on Union Street — coffee, wine, walking Suki past the boutiques — to know these blocks pretty well.
